Each year, Veterans Day—celebrated on 11 November—is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who, with courage and sacrifice, served their country in the armed forces. We at Gotica Toscana also took part in the commemorations at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, representing the historical memory of the 91st Infantry Division and honoring the many servicemen—Italian, American, and Allied—who fought during the Second World War. Our presence is meant, today as in the past, as a gesture of respect and gratitude toward those who placed freedom and peace above all else.
An important place of memory in Tuscany
The Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, located just a few kilometers from Florence, is one of the American overseas cemeteries administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission—it contains the remains of more than 4,400 fallen soldiers of the Italian Campaign of 1943–1945. Walking among the white crosses, observing the memorial, and reading the names of those young men means confronting history in a direct, deeply felt, and profound way.
Because for us memory is not just remembrance, it is a commitment
Partecipare a queste cerimonie non è solo un atto simbolico: è un modo per connect historical events to the present, for connecting historical events to the present to the new generations and to defend the value of memory. In our work with Gotica Toscana—through museums, routes, excursions, and exhibitions—remembering the victims and honoring the veterans means turning the past into a lesson for the future.
Your contribution can make a difference
We would like to invite you to continue this journey together with us: by taking part in visits, sharing initiatives, and supporting projects of preservation and historical outreach.
Every gesture—even a small one—helps keep memory alive and build awareness.
