Torricella di San Quirico, Vernio (PO) // Gothic Line Memorial Park

In September 1944, between the 9th and the 24th of the month, the area between Vernio and Barberino di Mugello was the scene of an intense battle between the German troops of the 754th Grenadier Regiment, belonging to the 334th Infantry Division “Phalange Aphricaine”, and the American soldiers of the 133rd Regiment of the 34th “Red Bull” Division. The focal point of the fighting was Poggio della Torricella, known as “Elevation 810”, which represented a key point in the defence of the Gothic Line. The German defences, built with positions and trenches in strategic locations, made the battle particularly fierce and difficult for the Allies. After days of exhausting fighting, the American troops managed to capture the strongpoint, dealing a decisive blow to the German forces and advancing northwards.

Today, the place that was the scene of this bloody battle has become the “Gothic Line Memorial Park”, located at Torricella di San Quirico, in the municipality of Vernio. This historic park, always accessible, preserves the original defensive structures, overlooking a spectacular landscape between the Val di Bisenzio and the Mugello. Hiking routes, known as “memory trails”, allow visitors to explore the places where the fighting took place, offering an immersive and reflective experience. The park is a place of remembrance and historical education, where visitors can relive an important chapter of the Second World War and reflect on the impact of the war on these lands.
