L’ultima volta che Travis Prestridge fu tra le braccia di suo padre era il 1943, prima di partire in guerra in Italia. Suo padre Robert fu ucciso in azione nei combattimenti dello sbarco americano ad Anzio mentre era in servizio nella 3a Divisione di Fanteria.
Travis è dunque cresciuto senza il padre, caduto in guerra durante la Campagna d’Italia combattendo il nemico germanico. Mai aveva visitato la tomba del padre in Italia prima. Adesso, all’età di 82 anni, Trevis ha potuto incontrare di nuovo suo padre nel Cimitero Americano di Nettuno. Una storia commovente, resa possibile grazie ad Andrew Biggio e al crowdfunding di “The Rifle”, con la collaborazione di Gotica Toscana aps.
War has a thousand faces, all of them cruel, but the most painful is surely when children and parents are separated forever. Robert Predstridge fell in action during the Battle of Cisterna di Latina on May 23, 1944. In front of the white cross marking his father’s grave, his son Travis, after so many years, breaks down in a liberating cry. A cry that was contagious for those of us who were there with him, a cry that makes us understand the immense void left in the heart of a son whose young father was taken by fate forever, after leaving him as an infant to go to war.
