Between History and Sports
Today the Museo Gotica Toscana (MUGOT) enthusiastically hosted “La Storia in Bici,” a cycling initiative created to unite sport, history and memory through a symbolic and cultural route. The event, which started from Salerno and headed to Verona, retraces some of the crucial stages of the Italian Campaign during World War II, passing through the places where the U.S. Fifth Army operated to liberate the country. Dozens of cyclists from all over Italy took part, escorted by the Traffic Police, in a commemorative journey that blends past and present. The participants, united by their passion for cycling and history, testify to how sport can be a powerful vehicle of memory, paying tribute to the events that shaped our country.
Collaboration and Culture: the role of the Polytechnic University of Turin.
Prominent among the initiative's supporters is the Polytechnic University of Turin, which wanted to underscore the importance of the relationship between technology, culture and sport by donating a copy of the book “Polytechnic Bicycles: Between Inventions, Innovations and Social Challenges” to MUGOT. This work, available in the museum library, collects studies and projects by researchers and students who have explored the impact of the bicycle in society, highlighting how this means of transportation has spanned eras and social transformations. The book represents a further connection between the worlds of academia and the historical memory, inviting visitors to reflect on the role of the bicycle not only as a means of transportation, but also as a symbol of freedom and progress.
Health and Community: the Support of LILT and HMV Italy
“La Storia in Bici” also received support from LILT (Italian League for the Fight against Cancer), which promotes a healthy lifestyle and emphasizes the importance of prevention through sports. LILT took the opportunity to reiterate that practicing physical activity regularly, such as cycling, is an effective way to improve health and reduce the risk of disease. Also present at the event was a small representation of HMV Italy, who testified to the affection and support toward this unique initiative. After the stop at MUGOT, the cyclists headed to the Felonica Museum, where they will continue their journey on a symbolic route through World War II memorial sites. Safe travels to the participants as they continue to weave history and sport along their journey.
