This year's Befana tradition took on a very special flavor in Mugello, mixing the warmth of solidarity with a passion for history and vintage military vehicles. In fact, the iconic little old lady made a sui generis tour through the territory: she arrived in Borgo San Lorenzo on foot, in Vicchio escorted by the three Wise Men on horseback and, finally, in Scarperia aboard an old American “Jeep,” owned by her friend Manfredo Monti. Welcoming her in Piazza dè Vicari were a number of local associations ready to receive gift parcels destined for needy families.
In Scarperia, the Befana was presented in the picturesque setting of an event organized by “HMV Italy” (History & Military Vehicles Italy), federated with the’A.S.I. (Italian Historic Automobile Association). All this is under the auspices and support of the Associazione Gotica Toscana APS, which hosts HMV Italia's museum headquarters in Ponzalla. The museum of the Tuscan Gothic Association is known far beyond regional borders for the care and passion with which it keeps historical memory alive: a true national reference point for enthusiasts, schools and visitors from all over Italy.
For Gothic Tuscany APS, with its constant commitment to the preservation and dissemination of historical and cultural heritage related to World War II, events such as the Befana in Mugello are important. In fact, it is not just a matter of adding a touch of color and authenticity with the presence of vintage military vehicles, but of creating occasions of encounter in which tradition, solidarity and memory come together. In this way, the association enhances its mission before the citizenry, providing a valuable historical backdrop to initiatives that involve the entire community.
In the presence of majority councillor Simone Magnolfi, acting mayor, the Befana delivered groceries to the parish of Scarperia, represented by Don Antonio Cigna, and the councillors of the Confraternita di Misericordia. Sacks filled with basic necessities destined for the most needy families in the municipality: a concrete gesture of solidarity, the result of the synergy between the various local associations. An example of how the past can be remembered, staged and transformed into a moment of encounter and generosity, capable of consolidating the bond between territory and people.
