The MATASZ-Don82 event
On Jan. 11, the ’MATASZ-Don82“ event was held in Sopron, Hungary, in which the Tuscan Gothic Association APS took part for the third consecutive year, representing the Royal Army. This commemorative event, dedicated to the dramatic breakthrough of the Don front and the subsequent retreat, included a 35-kilometer route involving more than 500 official participants, who were joined by numerous informal attendees. The day opened in Sopron's main square with a salute from the authorities and a ceremony at the war memorial. The playing of the ”Silence“ by the trumpeter of Gotica Toscana underscored the solemnity of the moment. Afterwards, the groups moved to the different stations, where the Italian reception reserved mulled wine and panettone, fostering an atmosphere of sharing. Organized by MATASZ, an association of Hungarian reservists sponsored by the Magyar Ministry of Defense, the event commemorates a tragedy shared by Italy and Hungary: both nations suffered devastating losses, with some 80,000 Hungarian soldiers killed at the front, a number comparable to that of the Italian ARMIR.
The authenticity and attention to historical details shown by Gotica Toscana APS have been highly appreciated, so much so that the group has already been invited for the 2026 edition. Participation in “MATASZ-Don82” is part of Gotica Toscana APS's broader commitment to the preservation of historical memory. The association does not just wear period uniforms, but offers events in which artifacts, uniforms and documents are presented with historical fidelity and philological care. Volunteers act as interpreters of stories and sacrifices, offering the public an experience that goes beyond the simple reconstruction of wartime episodes.
An Yak-52 flying over the field
A Yak-52, derived from the Zlín Z-226, a Czechoslovak-made single-engine trainer, appeared during field reenactments, as some videos show. The aircraft is distinguished by its low wing, metal structure, and good performance in aerobatic flight, features that have made it popular among warbird enthusiasts and those seeking a historic aircraft with handling and reliability.
The reenactment activities of Gotica Toscana aps
In Italy, Gotica Toscana APS is active with prominent events, such as “The Liberty Column” (April 25) and “A Dive into History” (during the anniversaries of the Battle of the Giogo Pass). These initiatives, at the same time historical and cultural, bring the public closer to the past, keeping alive the memory of the sacrifice of entire generations.
