The MATASZ-Don82 event
On January 11th, in Sopron (Hungary), the "MATASZ-Don82" event took place, with the Gotica Toscana APS Association participating for the third consecutive year, representing the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito). This commemorative event, dedicated to the dramatic breakthrough of the Don front and the subsequent retreat, featured a 35-kilometer route that involved over 500 official participants, along with numerous informal attendees. The day began in the main square of Sopron, with a greeting from the authorities and a ceremony at the war memorial. The playing of the “Last Post” by the trumpet player of Gotica Toscana highlighted the solemnity of the moment. The groups then moved to various positions, where the Italian hospitality offered mulled wine and panettone, fostering a spirit of sharing. Organized by MATASZ, the Hungarian reservists' association sponsored by the Hungarian Ministry of Defense, the event recalls a tragedy that unites Italy and Hungary: both nations suffered devastating losses, with approximately 80,000 Hungarian soldiers falling at the front, a number comparable to the Italian ARMIR's casualties.
The authenticity and attention to historical detail displayed by Gotica Toscana APS were greatly appreciated, so much so that the group has already been invited to the 2026 edition. Participation in "MATASZ-Don82" is part of Gotica Toscana APS's broader commitment to the preservation of historical memory. The association does not simply wear period uniforms but organizes events where artifacts, uniforms, and documents are presented with historical accuracy and scholarly care. The volunteers serve as interpreters of stories and sacrifices, offering the public an experience that goes beyond the mere reconstruction of military episodes.
An Yak-52 flying over the field
During the reenactments in the field, as shown in some videos, an Yak-52 appeared, derived from the Czechoslovakian-built Zlín Z-226, a single-engine trainer. The aircraft is distinguished by its low wing, metal structure, and excellent aerobatic performance, features that have made it popular among warbird enthusiasts and those seeking a historical aircraft with agility and reliability.
The reenactment activities of Gotica Toscana APS
In Italy, Gotica Toscana APS is active with significant events such as "La Colonna della Libertà" (April 25) and "Un tuffo nella storia" (during the anniversaries of the Battle of Passo del Giogo). These initiatives, both historical and cultural, bring the public closer to the past, keeping the memory of the sacrifice of entire generations alive.
Those who wish to support or join the activities of the association can consult the dedicated webpage. and become a member, thus contributing to preserving and promoting the historical memory of the military events that shaped our history.
