Bologna (BO) // Memorial Museum of Freedom

The Memorial Museum of Freedom was born from the dream of Edo Ansaloni, a young man from Bologna who, at just 18 years old, began documenting the events of the Second World War in his city with his movie camera. During the bombings of Bologna, Edo would venture onto the rooftops to film the drama of the war and, unknowingly, captured one of the most significant moments in Italian history: the entry of Polish troops into Bologna on 21 April 1945, Liberation Day. Those images, charged with meaning, became the basis for a larger project. In 2000, the year in which Bologna was proclaimed European Capital of Culture, Edo fulfilled his dream by inaugurating the Memorial Museum of Freedom, a place dedicated to the memory of the war and to the struggle for Liberation.

Although the Museum is not strictly linked to the events of the Gothic Line, it recounts the completion of that chapter of history: Bologna, the final destination of the war in the Apennines, represented a decisive prerequisite for the total liberation of Italy from Nazi-Fascism. The museum, unique of its kind, offers a sensory and immersive experience through dioramas, sound and visual effects, and original films, such as those shot by Edo himself. Dedicated to the memory of his father Arturo Ansaloni, a partisan in the Liberation, and to all the victims of the war, the museum is aimed above all at younger generations, inviting them to reflect on the atrocities of the conflict and on the importance of peace. When visiting the museum, silence is requested not only as a sign of respect, but also to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the emotions that this unique place is able to evoke.
