The MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana in Ponzalla, Scarperia, is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition titled "The Price of Freedom," which will take place starting on August 4, 2024. This exhibition aims to pay tribute to the historic liberation of Florence from Nazi-fascist occupation, which occurred on August 11, 1944, and to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of the citizens of Florence.
The exhibition will offer visitors a detailed reconstruction of that historic day through documents, photographs, testimonies and period exhibits. “The Price of Freedom” aims to revive those moments of struggle and hope, highlighting the profound significance of a date that lies at the foundation of our city's soul and identity.
To understand the importance of August 11, 1944, it is enough to recall the words with which the awarding of the Gold Medal for Military Valor to our city on August 10, 1945 was motivated: ’Generously and tenaciously in the military operations that secured its Liberation, it lavished itself in every form: fearlessly resisting the prolonged, rabid Germanic bombardment, maimed in persons and in the distinguished works of art. Fighting valiantly the insidiousness of the frank shooters and Germanic soldiers. Contributing with every strength to the Resistance and insurrection: in the center, on the banks of the Arno and the Mugnone, in Careggi, in Cercina and everywhere; giving the blood of her children copiously so that a free people could again express itself in a free nation.“ These words, though couched in language that may appear outdated and archaic today, powerfully evoke the sacrifice and heroism of the Florentines, describing Florence as a living organism, an entity with a soul and an identity. August 11, 1944 is a date that perfectly embodies this reality.
On August 31, at 4:00 PM, a commemoration ceremony will be held at MuGot to honor those who contributed to the liberation of Florence and to remember the price of freedom that still allows us to live in a free and democratic nation today.
We invite many of you to attend this important exhibition and commemoration ceremony so that we will never forget the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom and continue to pass on the value of historical memory to future generations.
