In Garfagnana, the fighting on the Gothic Line lasted eight long months, bringing death and destruction also to the civilian population. It was an area where the 92nd “Buffalo” Division, composed mainly of African American soldiers, operated, clashing with the forces of the Italian Social Republic, supported by German troops. In the Garfagnana area, more than elsewhere, the conflict gave rise to a true civil war between Republican troops and some local partisan groups.
The Gothic Line Garfagnana Museum collects war materials and subsistence items from the armies involved. Set up in the premises of the former Don Bosco elementary school, the Museum presents documents, photographs, maps and testimonies on the conflict in Garfagnana. Inaugurated in 2016, the museum is managed by a group of enthusiasts and volunteers who offer visitors a detailed overview of the events that shaped the face of the region during the Second World War and beyond.
