Montignoso (LU) // Museum and Documentation Center on the Gothic Line

Montignoso, a village at the foot of the Apuan Alps, was affected by the first Gothic Line, which from Cinquale climbed the ridges of Monte Folgorito and Monte Carchio. On the ground floor of Villa Schiff-Giorgini, in Via Fondaccio, is the Documentation Centre on the Gothic Line, a museum facility that collects images, documents and objects from the Second World War relating to the Apuan-Versilian area.

Consisting of five rooms with wall illustrations of the main wartime events, it includes an interactive scale model (1.80×1.70 m) showing the route of the Gothic Line, the opposing positions, the sites of massacres and the key episodes of the partisan struggle. A multimedia room, equipped with eight screens, presents the testimonies of some of the protagonists, now in their nineties, while an exhibition area with three display cases contains ammunition, helmets and other relics donated by Pietro Maghelli and Vincenzo Gemelli (“Beretta”).

Managed by the ANPI of Montignoso, the Centre welcomes researchers, enthusiasts and visitors interested in learning about this page of history; anyone who owns objects from the period can contribute by enriching the collection and keeping alive the memory of a conflict that deeply marked the local community.
