Monument at the Beginning of the Gothic Line in Cinquale (LU)

  • 0

In the locality of Cinquale in Versilia, a seaside center in the municipality of Montignoso, an important monument of the Gothic Line is erected, marking the beginning of the German defensive infrastructure near the Tyrrhenian Sea. In truth, the German fortifications extended along the entire stretch of coast between Tuscany and Liguria, from Cinquale to La Spezia.

The marble monument is the work of sculptor Vito Tongiani. It is located on the bridge along the seafront, with the Apuan Alps in the background. It was inaugurated in October 2004 by the President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Just below, next to the bridge, is the old marker with the inscription "Gothic Line, September 1944-April 1945."1
