The article reconstructs the story of Michele Fonseca, a second lieutenant pilot of the Italian Air Force, born in 1916 near Florence and assigned to the 228th Land Bomber Squadron at Decimomannu, Sardinia, flying Savoia-Marchetti S.79 “Sparviero” aircraft. From his first missions after Italy entered the war in 1940 to operations against convoys and Royal Navy units in the Mediterranean, the picture is one of growing experience and exhaustion. Among the episodes recalled are the air-sea battle of Punta Stilo and later sorties between 1940 and early 1941. The story culminates in his last mission on 8 May 1941, when Fonseca's aircraft was shot down and he was reported missing before his death was confirmed. The article ends by highlighting the bitter bureaucratic slowness that, after the war, long delayed the payment of what was owed to his family.
