L’articolo ricostruisce la vicenda di Michele Fonseca, sottotenente pilota dell’Aeronautica, nato nel 1916 nel Fiorentino e assegnato alla 228a Squadriglia da bombardamento terrestre a Decimomannu, in Sardegna, equipaggiata con i Savoia-Marchetti S.79 “Sparviero”. Dalle prime missioni dopo l’entrata in guerra nel 1940 alle operazioni contro convogli e unità della Royal Navy nel Mediterraneo, emerge un percorso di crescente esperienza e logoramento. Tra gli episodi ricordati, la partecipazione alla battaglia aeronavale di Punta Stilo e le sortite successive tra il 1940 e l’inizio del 1941. Il racconto culmina nell’ultima missione dell’8 maggio 1941, quando l’aereo di Fonseca viene abbattuto e il pilota risulta disperso prima della conferma della morte. In chiusura, l’articolo sottolinea anche l’amara lentezza burocratica che, nel dopoguerra, ritarda a lungo il riconoscimento delle spettanze dovute alla famiglia.
